Mark
DuBerry’s most recent release is an album entitled 'Head Room'.
All composition, arranging, recording and producing were done by
the artist who also played all the instruments.
The
music on the album is rich and complex in terms
of both melody and composition and is mostly instrumental, with
some atmospheric vocals. Acoustic and electric guitars feature throughout
along with electronic instruments and strong rhythms which combine
to create a lush, vibrant and powerful sound. World
flavours come together with dance, progressive rock, jazz and ambient
influences to produce music that explores an eclectic, layered mix
of different styles and atmospheres while also maintaining its own
strong identity. Much of the music has a ‘film-score’
feel and some of the pieces have an ‘epic’
quality.
The
overall sound is reminiscent of such diverse artists as:
Yes, David Sylvian, The Future Sound Of London, Orbital, Mike Oldfield,
Genesis, Moby, Pat Metheny and Pete Namlook, although the
music definitely has its own distinctive style.
Each
piece has a tentatively suggested theme,
while also leaving plenty of room for the listener to respond
to the music in their
own unique way. Some of the ideas for the pieces come from world
events and the environment, love, the pursuit of excellence and Jungian
psychology. The album as a whole is a tapestry of different musical
styles and philosophical explorations and has the feeling
of a journey or
a story. The title, 'Head Room' suggests a mental
space, a state of mind, an inner world full of archetypal images
and themes which
is what the music is all about.
The
album was mastered by Bob Katz at
Digital Domain. Bob is a great mastering engineer with a wealth
of experience
who
approached the project with a great deal of sensitivity and care.
The
artwork for the album was created by Barry McCabe,
a photographer and graphic artist of great intuitive ability and
imaginative flair.
The cover art works
as a beautiful elaboration and visual extension of the music, suggesting
motifs, atmospheres and feelings associated with the music but also
standing as a group of strong images in their own right. The 'logo'
at the top of each of these pages is also one of Barry's images.
